Performer & Audition Guide

We’re thrilled that you’re considering performing at The Downbeat. We welcome jazz in
all its forms: traditional, contemporary, fusion, vocal jazz, and experimental. This guide
is designed to give you all the information you need to prepare, perform, and make the
most of your time on our stage. Selections are made by a committee of musical peers,
and you will contacted within 2 weeks of your submission. Please complete the form

Performance Logistics

Performers at The Downbeat should plan for a single Saturday night set lasting between 1.5 and 2 hours. Bands are limited to a maximum of three to four musicians on stage at any given time. Artists are required to arrive at least 45 minutes prior to their scheduled set time to allow for load-in and soundcheck. The venue provides a basic backline, including a drum kit with snare, kick, cymbals, and standard hardware.

Technical and Sound Amenities:

The Downbeat provides a full PA system with channels for both vocals and instruments, as well as onstage monitors for performer use. One vocal microphone is available, and DI boxes can be provided for bass or keyboards as needed. Performers with special or additional technical requirements should notify the venue at least one week prior to their performance to ensure proper accommodation.

Payment & Financial Terms:

We value and respect our artists and is committed to clear, upfront financial arrangements. Compensation is provided either as a flat fee or a door split, as agreed upon in advance of the performance. Payment is issued by check immediately following the performance; all performers must complete a W-9 prior to payment. Artists are welcome to sell CDs, merchandise, or digital downloads on site. We do not take commission on these sales

Promotion & Marketing:

We are committed to helping audiences discover and enjoy your music. All performances are promoted through the venue’s website, social media platforms, and email newsletters. Artists are encouraged to share event links and promotional materials through their own channels to help build excitement for the show. On select nights, performances may be livestreamed or recorded; artists will always be notified in advance if this applies to their set.

Audience & Atmosphere:

Performances at The Downbeat typically play to an audience of approximately 45 guests. The atmosphere is primarily seated and listening-focused, with patrons enjoying casual dining during performances, creating an intimate, attentive jazz club environment

Professional & House Rules:

Artists performing at The Downbeat are expected to arrive on time, fully prepared for their set, and to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Performers should adhere to a smart-casual dress code that reflects the club’s atmosphere. In the event of a cancellation, artists must notify the venue as soon as possible, but no later than 1 week in advance.

Growth & Community Opportunities:

We are proud to support emerging talent and foster a vibrant artistic community. We host an Open Messenger Stage every Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, providing artists with a welcoming platform to share their work. Musicians may also be considered for multi-night residencies, along with opportunities to participate in artist mentorship and networking events. Select performances may be professionally recorded, with video content made available for artists to use in their portfolios.
